Antioch’s Day of the Dead Exhibit Set to Open Oct. 24

by ECT

The Arts & Cultural Foundation of Antioch is proud to collaborate with Give Always to Others & Company (GATO) to present their annual observance of the Day of the Dead, an ancient tradition of indigenous people of  Mexico and other parts of the world of honoring and remembering those who have departed.

It is believed that departed spirits come back to reunite with loved ones and to enjoy the past times they had while on earth. It is an event that is now being observed in local schools and communities such as the Oakland Museum. Sometimes memory tables are displayed stating a cause or social justice awareness. This tradition reminds us that life is a dual existence with death and is celebrated with gathering of people recalling fond memories, favorite food and items. Altars commonly called “ofrendas”, and also known as “memory tables” are installed in homes and galleries.  These tables are filled with items that represent the four elements of nature: earth, wind, water and  fire. Items placed on the tables are pictures of the honoree, their favorite past times: cards, magazines, cigarettes, as well as their favorite food. Art work will also be displayed enhancing the Day of the Dead theme.

The free Day of the Dead exhibit, “Reunited Once Again/ Reunidos de Nuevo”, at the Lynn House Gallery, will open Saturday, October 24th and continues through November 7th on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 1-4 PM.

There will be an opening reception on October 24th from 2-4 PM.

The Lynn House Gallery is located at 809 West First Street, in downtown Antioch, across from the AMTRAK Station. The exhibit is sponsored by Give Always to Others & Company, Arts & Cultural Foundation of Antioch and a grant from Keller Canyon Grant from CCC District V Supervisor Federal Glover.
