Antioch: Space Heater for Family Dog Sparks Garage Fire

by ECT

At 11:39 pm Thursday, Contra Costa County firefighters responded to a report of a residential structure fire in the 2800 block of Harris Drive off Shaddick in Antioch.

Upon arrival, firefighters located smoke coming out of multiple vents from the garage and attic area and flames inside the garage and were told all occupants of the home were out.

Firefighters mobilized to make access through a side door and remove the garage door and quickly extinguished the fire limiting it to the garage area. They also prevented the fire from extending to the attic. Smoke damage, however, was throughout the house.

According to preliminary information, the fire was caused by a space heater in the garage which they used to keep their dog warm.  There were no reports of injuries and at least three people were displaced including the family dog who was also safe.
