Antioch: Security Guard Shot Outside Starbucks as Gunfire is Exchanged

by ECT

An armed security guard was hospitalized Wednesday afternoon after being shot outside Starbucks in Antioch after multiple shots were fired.

The shooting occurred at 2:42 pm on A Street and W. 18th where police responded for shots fired with at least one person shot. Police immediately set up a perimeter and blocked off the parking lot.

IMG_3806As officers arrived, witnesses provided descriptions of the suspect. The suspect was soon detained a short distance away and was found to be in possession of a firearm. That suspect was taken into custody without further incident. Police did not release any suspect information, however, they did say the subject is an adult.

IMG_3820Officers at the scene also found a security guard had been struck once by gunfire. Based on information obtained during the investigation, it appears an argument at a nearby bus stop preceded the gunfire. An armed security guard observed this, drew his own weapon, and began to fire at the suspect.

During the exchange, the security guard was struck once and pulled into a nearby business. The security guard was taken to an area hospital and expected to make a full recovery. No other injuries were reported.

IMG_3848The case is under investigation and anyone with information is urged to contact the Antioch Police Department. No further details were provided.

I was at Wells Fargo across the street prior to this incident happening today. Near the ATM at Wells, APD had detained a male. As I pulled out of that shopping center and approaching the intersection of A and E. 18, I saw a police officer in foot pursuit running down E. 18 parallel to Wells.

At this time I believe shots were fired.

We then pulled into the Grocery Outlet shopping center and noticed almost everybody standing outside of the business and in the parking lot. That is when I observed a group of people standing at Starbucks and I heard that somebody had been shot.

Antioch is deteriorating and fast. People from Oakland and other Bay Area ghettos are tearing Antioch apart. The Mayor needs to take action soon!!!

We are not safe anywhere in this area. You cannot even go grab a cup of coffee without being caught in a hail of bullets.

I drive by this starbucks daily and this neighborhood is becoming worse than Sycamore. All the shootings lately have been in this area. Its difficult for Antioch Police to fight crime if the community fails to step up.

What has not been reported there was also a shooting either late Saturday night or early Sunday morning in the parking lot of Cruisers Bar, The man was shot in the stomach and hit in the head with a hammer, he is currently recovering at John Muir. I did not see a word in the media.

One thing that occurs to me is that it’s no longer reasonable to drive through Antioch without a dashcam. This isn’t a want anymore, it’s a need. We need to be able to document who was present at these incidents, who fired the shots, who was driving what vehicle, where they headed afterward. We need it when we drive through our own neighborhoods to be able to report accurately about who is hanging out on our streets when burglaries and vandalisms happen. We should have readily available footage when we need to report crime. There’s no “he said, she said” about it, no one can argue with what’s retrieved from the cam.
