Antioch School Board: Gibson-Gray Launches Website

by ECT

With council races and mayoral races underway and getting most of the headlines, I wanted to shed light on another race that will have an impact in East County which is the Antioch Unified School District Board of Trustees which has a total of 9 candidates

Diane Gibson-Gray shared yesterday that she has launched her updated campaign website and I encourage you to check it out. I’ve met Ms. Gibson-Gray many times and I can honestly say she cares about the Antioch School District and wants to continue improving the school district which is a huge task at hand.

I spoke with her briefly last night and asked her why she was running again.

“I want to continue the course of work which I began four years ago which is increasing academies, providing fiscal oversight and hiring the right leaders for the job. It is not an easy job, but at the end of the day, my reward is seeing the learning happening in the district, the students promoting throughout the grade levels and, of course, graduation day! The looks on the students and parents faces—Priceless,” said Gibson-Gray.

Here is a list of the 9 candidates.

  1. Linda Anderson
  2. Randy Benevides
  3. Barbara Cowan
  4. Diane Gibson-Gray
  5. Zandra Raphael
  6. Claire Renee Smith
  7. Debra Vinson
  8. Synitha Walker
  9. Jack (John) Yeager

With Walter Ruehlig running for city council, the filing for a run at Antioch City Council, the filing period for this race has been extended until August 15.

Below is Diane Gibson-Gray’s biography off the Antioch District website.

Biography

Elected in November 2008, it is my honor and privilege to work for the children of Antioch and their families. I am proud to have called Antioch my home for over 45 years. I graduated from Antioch High School, as did my son James.  My husband, Ken Gray, is retired from the city of Pittsburg, and now works part-time for the Ambrose Recreation Park District.

After a 28 year career in the telecommunications industry (cable), I left the corporate environment for the nonprofit arena and have been the Executive Director for the Arts Cultural Foundation of Antioch since 2005.   I feel fortunate to have a career which involves my passion for the community and takes me off Highway 4 as I spent far too many years commuting to cable systems located throughout northern California.   I always found the time to indulge my passion to be part of the community. From serving on city commissions to volunteering at festivals and supporting the business community as a Chamber of Commerce president, I’ve consistently found ways to give back to the community I call home. I feel my business and nonprofit backgrounds, along with my volunteer experience, provides the experience and compassion needed to be a good school board member.

I have a track record of success in leadership, relationship building, financial sectors, and getting the job with minimal resources. I believe in building collaborative partnerships to engage teachers, parents, and the community in order to create an environment for our students to succeed.

It is great to know Mrs Gibson-Gray will run again. She has a work ethic that compares to no one I know. Terrifically organized. Really has a concern for Antioch schools. No one else on that list I would vote for.

Not really a good list to chose from. The school board has a long way to go to improve but I’ll stick with Diane one more term, but that is all she gets from me.

You need to check the facts in your article. Diane has 2 sons who graduated from AHS. David Gibson is her oldest. He graduated in 1994. She purposefully excludes him from any public article because of family controversy. Is this the woman you want representing your children? One who doesn’t represent her own.
