Antioch Police Report Crime is Down… But Still a Big Problem

Here is a look at some of the slides that Antioch Police Chief Allan Cantando will be presenting to the City Council as part of his quarterly crime update which were shared at the latest Coffee With the Cops meeting yesterday morning. The report will highlight that overall crime is down for the first six month.

It’s important to remember that this crime report is good news for now, but when comparing the numbers over a 3-year period, they are misleading as overall crime is still up and does not account for all the crimes that go unreported.

We won’t get into great detail over the figures—you can look below—but overall crime went from 3,004 calls for services last year at this time to 2,568. When you break that down, that’s 436 calls less crimes or 72 less per month.

Homicides jumped 75% going from 4 in 2012 to 7 in 2013.  Arson has also increased by 76% in a time when fire departments are closing stations where it went from 17 in 2012 to 30 in 2013 or the first six-months.  Finally, the important number is that with less officers on the streets, arrests are down nearly 4%.

When you look at the crime stats, you must also take into account another set of figures which is the calls for service which has not changed. Last year at this point in time, there were 41,246 calls for service. When compared to this year’s calls for service, its 40,997—a change of -0.6. So while crime may be down, the level of response required has remained essentially the same.

We encourage you to tune into the City Council meeting as Chief Cantando will be going over these slides, and many others on Tuesday night.

We would also like to say thank you to all of the Antioch Police Officers who are working hard on little resources to protect not only Antioch, but helping prevent overflow crime into other cities. We salute you!

Thanks for stating what I said in the CCT. It is apparent that some stats are down, which is a good thing but one needs to take a look at what is going up. The violent crimes are escalating. Any crime profiler will tell you that is what happens when crime goes unchecked. Citizens need to be more pro-active and get on board with a neighborhood watch group.

I know the perfect candidate to lead the watch group. His name is George and he is as dedicated as the next guy. A good neighborhood watch can help weed out some of the riff raff in the neighbor hood.

[…] Looking at the crime numbers, overall crime may be down, but homicides are up 75% while robbery and aggravated assault are essentially the same. . The numbers are somewhat skewed because Mr. Dietzel is only looking at a six-month window of time. When looking at a longer time frame—say three years—crime is still higher than it was in the past.
