Antioch Police Report 300 Fireworks Related Complaints Over July 4 Holiday, 17 Arrests

by ECT

While Antioch residents took to social media to voice their frustrations over illegal fireworks, the Antioch Police Department was busy responding to complaints.

According to Police Chief Tammany Brooks, he confirmed Monday they had more than 300 fireworks related complaints that resulted in confiscated fireworks along with 17 arrests.

In response to community outrage over illegal fireworks along with multiple fires that start from fireworks, Antioch Police put together a proactive detail team to respond to fireworks related calls. Brooks stated that one team alone responded to nearly 100 complaints.

Police said prior to the July 4 holiday, they had 31 complaints of fireworks which resulted in 6 arrests. This was a decrease from the 77 complaints received during the same time period in 2017, or the 88 complaints we received in 2016.

The police department thanked the community for reporting illegal fireworks and assisting them with their proactive detail.

It is anticipated that the City of Brentwood, City of Oakley, City of Pittsburg will release their stats int he coming days along with Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.

We were up on one of the highest hills in Antioch and the entire area from Pittsburg to Oakley was covered in illegal fireworks until midnight at least.
Some of them were almost better than the city of Antioch. They started way before the city fireworks too. Kind of scary.

Sorry, I can’t jump on the band wagon of what a great job APD did in proactively responding to a clearly out of control situation in Antioch on July 4th. I could have walked outside my front door 10 steps and identified 17 people to be arrested for violating the illegal fireworks law. With the amount of illegal fireworks clearly seen, heard and complained about by citizens, the police departments “proactive” response was clearly far inadequate bordering on incompetent. They need several of these types of “detail teams” positioned throughout the city with vigorous enforcement of the law.
