Antioch Police Officer Helps Rescue Woman from House Fire

by ECT

At 3:30 am Monday, Contra Costa County Firefighters responded to a report of a residential structure fire in the 2400 block Pecan Street in Antioch.

Firefighters arrived to find a two-story home in flames which resulted in heavy damage to the home and deemed a total loss.

According to Antioch Police, they were dispatched to the incident where a person was trapped on the roof and having difficulty breathing after two others escaped from the home. The victim went to the roof after flames blocked her exits inside the home.

Antioch Police Captain Tammany Brooks explained that Officer Downie took quick action when he arrived and located the resident sitting on the roof above the garage with the fire quickly spreading throughout the house, leaving the resident trapped.

“Two other residents were able to escape the fire, Officer Downie maneuvered some garbage cans under the resident and guided her off the roof to safety while standing on a car in the driveway of the home,” said Brooks. “His swift and decisive actions most certainly saved the resident from serious injury or worse.  This is just another example of the amazing officers we have here at the Antioch Police Department.”

The fire was likely started as a grease fire from the kitchen.

Every time I prepare a rental unit for new tenants I find the grease trays under the stove burners totally full of grease it’s disgusting and a dangerous fire hazard, not saying this was the case but people don’t realize that grease burns like petroleum and is really hard to put out when it is on fire.

We obviously need a prohibition on grease and possibly ovens in general. They are a danger to our community.
