Updated: Antioch Police Say 13-Year-Old Arrested With Loaded Firearm

by ECT

The Antioch Police Department announced the arrest of a 13-year-old who was in possession of a loaded firearm with rounds that could penetrate up to a level IIA ballistic vest.

According to police, an anonymous person reported there were three juvenile behind an apartment at 2301 Sycamore Drive and that one of the juveniles had a gun. The call came in around 2:30 pm on September 14, 2016.

When officers arrived they determined that the apartment backed up to another set of apartments and there was a dirt alleyway between the two buildings.

Officers saw a 13-year-old male holding a gun in his hand. Two 13-year-old juveniles and a 15-year-old juvenile were contacted. When the 13-year-old male saw the police he dropped the gun.

Police say he had a loaded magazine for the gun on his person. The gun was checked and found to be a Czechoslovakian made 7.62×25 pistol. The rounds for this pistol can penetrate up to level IIA ballistic vests.

The 13 year old was arrested and transported to Juvenile Hall. The other two juveniles were identified and released to their parents.

Antioch Police Captain Tammany Brooks stated that he was pleased officers were able to take the subject and firearm off the street before someone was hurt.

“The incident is very unfortunate but a very real reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers everywhere face today,” said Antioch Police Captain Tammany Brooks. “I am glad we were able to take this young man into custody before he injured or killed anyone.”

Antioch Police provided no further details on the incident.

Update:

On Monday, Antioch Police Captain Diane Aguinaga stated the firearm was registered and the owner was contacted. The owner of the firearm has desired prosecution and police are in the process of filing charges. She also said the firearm was stolen between 5-to-10 years ago and they were unsure at this time how the teen got in possession of the firearm.

A lot more info is left out than should be. Who owns the gun? Was the parent arrested? Why was the gun not in a lock box? PD should be doing more gun education for people with kids in the house.
