Antioch Police Chief Allan Cantando announced yesterday that a teen has pled guilty to murder of an 83-year-old man last May.

The murder occurred on May 18 near Orchard Hardware Supply Store in Antioch where 83-year-old Patrick Chang was attacked and later died. On May 24 , the Antioch Police Department arrested a 15-year old teenage boy on charges of assault and robbery.  Police praised the use of social media for leading to the arrest of the teenage boy.

The teen is now awaiting sentencing.

Statement made via Facebook

In May of last year, 83-year old Antioch resident Patrick Chang was assaulted and robbed in a shopping center parking lot. Unfortunately, about a month later, Mr. Chang died from the injuries he sustained during the robbery.

After the incident, officers and detectives worked tirelessly to solve this case. We sought the public’s help by sharing a surveillance photo on our Facebook page, hoping someone could help us identify the person responsible for this horrific crime. You guys came up BIG. In less than a week, detectives arrested a teenager who later confessed to committing the crime.

As an update, I wanted to let you know that two weeks ago, the teen pled guilty to murder and is currently awaiting sentencing.

This is, yet, another example demonstrating the power of the close relationship and the constant communication shared between this police department and the community it serves.

I want to thank everyone who helped bring some closure to this tragic event. And once again, I will share with you how very proud I am to be YOUR police chief!

Sincerely,

Chief Allan Cantando

Great job for the people stepping up and identifying this piece of garbage. This is what makes a safe and low criminal rate community/city. Other cities like Oakland where the public does not get involved and protect the criminals from the police wonder why they have a hundred plus homicides. They want to blame everyone else for their problems.

yes, this little creep robs an 83 year old man; who could raise a kid like that. his parents should go to jail with him for flunking parenting.

UNbelievable. At that age, You’re better off taking your chances carrying a piece – It might give you a chance at survival.
