Antioch PD: Protect Yourself From Holiday Thefts

Antioch Police Chief Allan Cantando put out a nice reminder of how folks can protect themselves this holiday season from theft. This was posted via their Facebook Page and was sent out in an email a few days ago.

The Holidays Are Here & So Are the Crooks!

Simple awareness and a little extra precaution can help to substantially reduce the risk of becoming a victim during the holiday season. The City of Antioch Police Department is encouraging residents to have a safe holiday season by promoting home security. During the holidays we are out and about more than ever. Not only are we working, but we’re doing more shopping, attending holiday events and parties or attending family gatherings, which leaves our homes unoccupied and possibly vulnerable. Consider home security before you leave no matter how long you will be gone. Reduce the opportunity for residential burglary by reviewing these tips.

  • Secure all windows and doors no matter how long you will be gone
  • Shut garage doors and park vehicles in the garage
  • Trim landscaping to allow surveillance around your house and to prevent hiding spots
  • Consider what can be seen through windows like gifts under a holiday tree, laptops, cameras or other valuables.
  • Light your home inside and out using timers or sensors, giving the appearance someone is home
  • Lock-up valuables like laptops and jewelry
  • Store common items like cameras in uncommon places
  • Cable lock flat screen televisions and computers
  • Engrave California Driver’s License numbers on valuables like televisions, electronics and tools
  • Record serial numbers for all items that have them and inventory all property
  • Tell trusted neighbors when you will be out of town so they can watch your house
  • Report suspicious activity 24 hours a day, when it is taking place by calling the non emergency police dispatch number at (925) 778-2441
  • If there is an emergency call 911
  • Join Neighborhood Watch
  • Teamwork and looking out for one another is an essential part of a safe and secure neighborhood. Working together we can all have a safe and happy holiday season.
Just this afternoon we had an example of teamwork and a neighbor looking out for their fellow neighbors. A neighbor called the police and reported what they suspected was a residential burglary in progress. The neighbor reported seeing a male acting as a lookout in front of a residence while two other male subjects were seen going into the backyard then entering the residence. Officers responded and were able to apprehend the suspects and arrest them for burglarizing the residence. Thanks to the alertness of a caring and concerned neighbor, several crooks have been apprehended and the intended victim is going to have a happy holiday.

Have a Happy and Safe Holiday season!

Sincerely,

Chief Allan Cantando
