I miss the Antioch of the 70’s…when I grew up there. I got out just in time, before the Richmond & Oakland people got there.

Nick C May 21, 2013 - 12:17 pm

Interesting, you know this guy is from Oakland or Richmond? Or is that just an innuendo that people from those areas are criminals? How does that make sense?

Jabari Mpagazi May 21, 2013 - 12:44 pm

@Nick I guess it’ll never change man 1 black male does something terrible WE all get blamed

John Smith May 21, 2013 - 1:21 pm

It’s a reasonable inference. Be men and raise your sons to be men and you won’t have people saying things like this. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know, you were the perfect father.

snotball willie May 21, 2013 - 6:34 pm

ur all brothers right ,

Tony L. May 21, 2013 - 2:28 pm

It’s true. i grew up in Oakley and once they opened up the section 8 apartments everything went to hell. All the new kids at school were repping Oakland, Richmond, Hayward etc. And guess what? Crime went up.

Tina May 21, 2013 - 2:41 pm

@ nick c may I ask where
U were born n lived as a child…?

Nick C May 22, 2013 - 12:44 pm

@Tina: Born in Berkeley, but spent time pretty much all over. LA, Oakland, Berkeley, Pittsburg, Antioch, Brentwood Etc. I’ve seen and dealt with all types of people. The diversity of the Bay Area is what I appreciate the most! Yeah you’ve got your jerks here and there but overall it’s cool

albert c May 21, 2013 - 4:04 pm

ive lived in antioch all my life and once antiochs section 8 rose, so did crime. we had alot of black people before in antioch and far less crime. its not about the race, its about the crime rate of oakland and richmond transferring to our neck of the woods.

Rick Grimes May 21, 2013 - 4:32 pm

This right here! Its the ghetto ass Richmond and Oakland section 8 folks who drove up crime. Poverty drives up crime, proof is in the prison system. Anyone who denies this is too stupid to realize it.

Stewart May 21, 2013 - 11:49 pm

I’m going to say what everybody is thinking —–> we should have picked our own cotton & left them in Africa. No matter what you say after this, the truth is the truth.

Shameeka Jun 1, 2013 - 3:54 am

Lmao I love how blacks act like this kind of violence is so rare. Google “black-on-white crime” make sure u have a few days to spend reading.

Blah May 21, 2013 - 1:20 pm

Is it just a rumor that when Brentwood and Antioch started taking more section 8 people that those in Richmond and Oakland started moving out there knowing their could get bigger houses for their money and bringing the crime with them? I work at Sutter….Antioch is ghetto and I’d never live there after some of the things I’ve seen. Even going to Raley’s is scary…
It’s crappy that some black people make all black people look bad, maybe the good ones should start pointing it out to the ones who make them look bad.

Nick C May 21, 2013 - 1:40 pm

Interesting, so you’re saying all the good non criminal black people should go to these black criminals and have a talk with them? LOL so I guess if we knew them like that it might work. Or how about you do the same? All the racist people you know? Yeah, go have a talk with them too. Let me know how that works out!

James May 21, 2013 - 6:12 pm

Your buddy Jabari is the first one to say anything about race, but somehow everyone else is the racist. It goes both ways

Chris G May 22, 2013 - 11:28 am

At blah. Antioch made housing cheap because of the mount of forclosures and the amount of houses being built without being anyone buying. This made it cheaper in antioch than places like oakland so the ghetto moved there. Also, section 8 came into the picture. People from section 8 need to get drug tested and monitored closely

karla May 21, 2013 - 3:10 pm

Yes I wasnt around the 70s but I feel the same way…send those section 8 people out of here….FUCKEN looser get a job stop stealing from inocent hard working people

blackmoneykillla May 21, 2013 - 4:44 pm

Not only oakland and richmond ppl u mean black monkeys

ECV May 21, 2013 - 10:15 am

Thanks for posting this Burk. Hopefully we can identify and catch this pond scum and either send him back over the hill or see him buried under it…

Thomas May 21, 2013 - 10:23 am

how about an eye for an eye. We don’t need them In our society. Do what the Asian communities do overseas. They kill their criminals. They don’t overcrowd their prisons. Allowing these people who are going to keep committing these crimes back into society with us is criminal.

Tiffany N. May 21, 2013 - 10:16 am

what frustrates me is society calling those who state the obvious… racists. But I am sorry. The great majority of people we see committing these horrific acts of crime, not to mention other thug acts, seem to always come back to African American males! I respect the African American community and I am Hispanic myself. I embrace all people who are different. But I am sick and tired of a large group of African American males in their teens through which seems their 30’s terrorizing this community!

Now if I were a respectable African American member of this community I would be outraged (I am outraged as a Hispanic) that these thugs are setting the African American community back many years with this animalistic behavior. We will not tolerate it! We are sick of it!!! and frankly I would like to round them (and other thugs white, black, Asian, Hispanic, umpa loompas, who cares) and terminate them. They do it in other countries and many times their crime rates are in check.

We are trying to raise families who will become productive members of this society. And I am tired of people without souls who could care less about other human beings roaming our streets of East County.

Chris G May 21, 2013 - 11:02 am

I agree with you 100%. It’s called statistics not racism

luvstovaca May 21, 2013 - 12:06 pm

I agree with you and Chris..Nicely said!!!!

H. Parham May 21, 2013 - 11:17 am

Was at a neighborhood watch commission meeting last month. One group reported having problems with senior citizens getting mugged in front of their market. It takes someone with no soul. So sad to see any one attacked, but someone’s beloved grandpa or grandma? This young man looks strong & healthy, he could have been anything he dreamed to be. When did he make it his dream to be a predator?

Nick C May 21, 2013 - 12:15 pm

No, the reason you get called a racist is due to your focusing in on one race. As if Hispanics don’t have gang members committing crimes. (Nortenos, Surenos?) Or as if White teens in Antioch aren’t committing any crimes. GTFOH Do you ever hop on news threads decrying the crimes committed by white or hispanic gang members? Don’t worry I’ll wait… -_-

Michael E May 21, 2013 - 1:20 pm

Actually I do Nick, I am white myself…I am sickened when anyone commits these unexplainable acts of violence. Yes, white folk commit crimes as do every specific group of race. The reason we are called racists is because of what happened to someone you and I both don’t even know. Most African American families are raised to HATE the white race for those actions hundreds of years ago back prior to Slavery being abolished in 1865, while as I can only speak for myself and the community I was raised(Pittsburg, Ca) that we were raised to treat everyone as an equal. While I know that is not the case in every white family, it was in the norm in our community and because of that I have friends from all over the world that do not see black, white, yellow, brown or whatever color our skins are….in fact Nick, you look familiar to me and I believe we have a common friend as well…does the name Anabelle mean anything to you???

Nick C May 21, 2013 - 1:33 pm

@Michael E: Did I read that right when you said African Americans are raised to HATE white people? WHA???…. But for our common friend? Yes, she is an old friend. You may in fact know me. Which startles me even further if you actually believe what you stated about us being trained to hate whites.

j (@whatsyapoint94) May 21, 2013 - 4:33 pm

What!!!!!!!! I dont know any famlies raised to hate white ppl lmao your are ignorant kill yourself

Sean May 21, 2013 - 10:57 pm

Shit, man. I’m black and I agree with half the things said on here. Ghetto is ghetto.

Jamie May 21, 2013 - 12:24 pm

Statistics show that when you account for SES, crime statistics even out across all races. Poorer people commit more crimes. There are underlying factor behind statistics. Glad you can read, next step, developing some analytical skills.

wishful thinking May 21, 2013 - 3:25 pm

100% on target, crime goes up when economy is down, and folk’s its way down, drastically bad, hence the ridiculous amount of home invasions and predatory assault/thefts/robberies/drug related crimes, etc. Doesn’t help when children do not get the education they should be getting either. Look at poor Vallejo’s 50% high school dropout rate of just a few years ago. Quick money crime is brought upon by desperation…. it’s a sad state of the nation and our youth is sadly falling prey to the poor choices our local governments have been making time and time again. The administrators don’t need fatter pocket books, the funding towards education and athletics should be beefed up, let the kids have hope.

wishful thinking May 21, 2013 - 3:29 pm

*hate seeing my own typos, please disregard and see my point, it’s clear enough.

karla May 21, 2013 - 3:12 pm

Amen!! Well said

john May 21, 2013 - 3:49 pm

110% agree with you, my sister lives in Antioch and its getting bad parents need to be more involved in their kids lives , and please dont say “i work long hours” BLAH BLAH BLAH. you had time to make babies then you have time to raise the babies , and if there are more sec.8 people, then they have the time to deal with their kids people just neeed to stop playing the victom roll and take responsibility for their own kids , but hey if these people want to stay trashy then so be it , they shouldnt be shocked we people talk about how they have no class or etiquette. if it barks like a dog well HELLO its a dog .

Barbara DuMont May 21, 2013 - 10:41 am

Remember he is a person of interest but just the way he is holding something in his waistband is telling. Well, my first thought was that he has a gun. To think that we have people wandering our streets and in our stores that have such a low regard for other people’s life. For what?? A few bucks? Or did the gentleman tell the little scum bag to go to hell and the kid shot him because he felt that he was “disrespected”? No body know for such but enough is enough. Some one knows who did this and its time to man up. Call the police. As to the rest of us, well I guess we are just going to have to really pay attention to our surroundings. It is just not right that the law abiding citizen can’t go out and about without worrying about these little scum bags robbing you—or shooting you.

carol May 21, 2013 - 10:42 am

Horrible. I hope the victim is able to recover. The suspect needs to be killed. Praying on our elders..how low..

nichole May 21, 2013 - 10:51 am

I grew up in Antioch and now it’s such a shit hole i don’t even like driving there….just like i don’t like driving to Oakland! Ghetto ass people (you know what I’m trying to say right) insane! Go back to Oakland where you monkeys belong!!!

J May 21, 2013 - 12:54 pm

Your obviously racist. But if you study the psychology of racist people you learn that it usually stems from some other reason and that the “racist views” is usually just the scapegoat to over up the real problem. I would challenge you to look deep into yourself and figure out your real issues because you obviously have some.

burkforoakley May 21, 2013 - 12:59 pm

Final warning… next one I will remove your post. Debate the topic, do not attack.

Kelly Connors Gutierrez May 21, 2013 - 2:21 pm

Nichole, that is very uncalled for and shows off your ignorance.

George A Guevara May 21, 2013 - 11:44 am

You all can thank the elected officials in the city of Antioch………….. No one else to blame

Donna May 21, 2013 - 11:44 am

Please notice that the above photos were taken inside and in front of Walmart, not Orchard as the article reports. Hopefully if someone inside WM can recognize the face…it could help.

burkforoakley May 21, 2013 - 12:30 pm

The video clearly is from Walmart, however, the incident occurred near Orchard. Police appear to have looked at all surrounding area video during their investigation.

Manny B May 21, 2013 - 12:02 pm

These type of individuals give citizens of Antioch and the African American community a bad reputation. My wife dropped her checkbook a while a ago and a young African American male dressed with the typical thug outfit of baggy pants and an oversized T shirt picked it up and gave it back to her. I’m not African American, but my brother in law is and my neices are part Portuguese and African Amercian. By brother in law is a college gratuate, my oldest neice just graduated USC and my other neice plays basketball on a scholarship from UC Davis. So lets not judge a book by it’s cover. I’m of Portuguese descent and I grew up with and have many African American friends. That being said, I can distinquish between the thugs and the hard working African Americans who have come here to have a better life. Of those on section 8 housing, only 7 to 10 percent have involved the police. This means at least 90% of those on section 8 are law abiding citizens. To take care of the 7 to 10%,who have moved here with criminal intentions, the citizens of Antioch need to vote in the half cent sales tax and landlord tax initiatives in this years November election to increase our police force. Combine this with more neighborhood watch involvement and have people stay in Antioch rather than move away will make Antioch a better place to live. Also, those who moved out of Antioch and either rented their home to section 8 without interviewing the tenant or sold their home to an investor, shame on you! You are part of the reason why crime has increased in Antioch, but the rest of us will make this a better place.

tyche May 23, 2013 - 11:43 am

I agree with Manny. BTW, Y’all’d make terrible cops! This thug is long gone already, & you’ve wasted all this time talking trash & race!!…
Now; if you put your thinking caps on, the REAL theives are the bankers & lawmakers and real estate barons STEALING OUR HARD EARNED MONEY, making a dump of our towns while they surround themselves with luxury & put their kids in private schools. For example: do you see any rich people living near an oil refinery? Heavens No! They’d pay a politician to put it say, in a place like..well,…how about…Antioch! And then they take great pleasure in listening to the citizens gripe and fight against each other, over petty crimes..,like you all are doing here.
WE ARE MISSING THE POINT, people.
We need to unite and help each other. Even that thug who had to stoop so low, or is on drugs. There is power in community…life is not all about money or status.

Red May 21, 2013 - 12:04 pm

Back to Oakland? No, now it’s back to Brentwood, the Sand Creek welfare projects. Some kind of suicidal, corrupt, or liberal-naive morons in city leadership started importing welfare recipients from Oakland into Brentwood. They’ve killed this town. How they live with themselves I’ll never know.

luvstovaca May 21, 2013 - 12:09 pm

Why doesnt the above report state that the man was shot?!! Why does Antioch keep protecting these thugs and leaving us to fend for ourselves?!!!

burkforoakley May 21, 2013 - 12:58 pm

That is a good question, the man was shot twice in the face which was stated over the police scanner. This was a report directly from Antioch PD and I made no changes.

Nick C May 21, 2013 - 1:13 pm

How exactly is Antioch “protecting” these so called thugs? O_o

bigmonitor13 May 21, 2013 - 12:33 pm

I visited Antioch in April for the first time in 19 years. I cannot believe how much it’s changed. How anybody moves there is beyond me. Way too dark for me.

Nick C May 21, 2013 - 1:17 pm

Good! Stay away, please. We don’t need racists like you in our diverse city. Move to Alabama. You’ll fit in there.

E brown 5478 May 21, 2013 - 1:39 pm

How is saying move to Alabama any less racist than saying move back to Oakland? If a black person said to go back to Oakland they wouldn’t be called a racist would they? So I guess the real racist shows their face without knowin it themselves.

Nick C May 21, 2013 - 1:51 pm

Actually, No, Alabama is known for it’s racism. Oakland is known for it’s diversity. Try again…

E brown 5478 May 21, 2013 - 2:08 pm

Here is where you try and defend the fact that you have your own racist views and misconceptions. Take a look back and really think abou your previous comments. Your saying a racist will be accepted or ” fit in fine” among the rest of the people is the same thing as someone saying go to Oakland where crime ad “diversity” are much more accepted. I’m just sayin. And thank you for completely missing my message compleat let the first time. Ill be much more direct this time. If a black person said to go back to Oakland he wouldn’t be a racist in most people eyes. So the fact that if a white person says it it’s racist is a racist view in its self.

Nick C May 21, 2013 - 2:24 pm

@EBrown: So let me get this straight.. I respond to this guys racism by giving him a suggestion to where he can go where is views are widely accepted (The south i.e Alabama, Mississippi ETC) and you see that as justifying my “own” racism? I don’t follow you. But if that’s your stance, then I digress..

Angry May 21, 2013 - 4:26 pm

Funny, I associate Oakland with the pos that robbed me at gunpoint. You know what I was told? To be white driving this car in Oakland was asking to be robbed. Nice huh? These people black ( I refuse to call them African American since I’m sure they e never been to Africa, nor have their parents or grandparents) white, Hispanics as well as Asians that are being raised with no respect for themselves or others need to be punished in a manner that actually stops them from commuting crime. Good ole bleeding heart CA talking about criminal rights ect is getting repulsive.

j (@whatsyapoint94) May 21, 2013 - 4:43 pm

Nick just quit they can’t be taught ya see the white ppl version of a “thug” is what you are experiencing on this thread its called white trash they cant be reasoned with they know everything and they dont really care to hear a rational thought they are usually racist “over the internet” and they feel brave behind the screen or keyboard the same way a thug is brave behind a gun the best way to win a argument with ppl of this intellect is let them think they are right mother nature will do its job

Peter S. May 21, 2013 - 6:44 pm

Oakland known for diversity? Hahahaha! Come on now you can’t be serious. Oakland is known for thugs. Mainly black and mexican. That place looks like a third world country. And Alabama is not known for racism…its known for college football and terrible public education system.

Nick C May 21, 2013 - 11:01 pm

@Peter S…You kinda missed the actual point and made an apples and oranges comparison. When it comes to “RACIAL” Issues and RACE in general Oakland is NOT known for anything but it’s diversity. And Alabama is known for it’s racism towards blacks. To feeble minded racists black thugs come to mind when it comes to Oakland. And your Alabama crimson comparison is asinine at best. Hell, Oakland has the A’s what’s your point?

Pinocchio check May 22, 2013 - 10:17 am

WW2 killed real diversity in Oakland. Just read it’s history on wikipedia. Oakland’s “diversity” is marred today by the same racial tension as is going on here. Anyone of any color who’s spent time in Oakland knows which neighborhoods are safe for whom, and when. They know it even if they won’t admit it.

Connie May 21, 2013 - 1:57 pm

I have to say that I am a white female. I live in Antioch and I LOVE Antioch. I think our Police are doing the job well with the resources that they have. There is crime all over the US and not just in Antioch so quit bashing Antioch. This was a disturbing and uncalled for crime to an elderly person ( or anyone ). No matter what color the person was that committed the crime, Please pray for our city and Nation and our youth.

Lori May 21, 2013 - 9:10 pm

Very well said Connie. Lets keep this person in our thoughts and prayers.

Jabari Mpagazi May 21, 2013 - 12:42 pm

I believe that justice is blind and that criminals should be prosecuted regardless of race. But it pisses me off to read all the racist and stereotypical comments. This one guy commits a terrible act of crime and you guys say things like “send all those monkeys back to Richmond and Oakland”. You take what this one guy did in try to pin it on a whole race of people. It’s just not right and it is stereo typical and racist. I am African-American obviously and in our community we have criminals as well as upstanding members of society. Its 2013 and you still want to unfairly label ALL of us because of what 1 individual does. In the last two years there have been multiple mass shootings and bombings all committed by white people but I don’t believe that all whites fit this stereotype. And hispanics have no room to talk about anyone. This state has been overrun by both legal and illegal hispanic immigrants that are also gang members who believe that California should still be Mexico. As many problems as I have had with Mexicans I would be a fool to think that they are all the same.

Smokey one May 21, 2013 - 12:55 pm

Listen to a scanner and you will hear what race is causing the problems in Antioch. Then figure the percentage of races against the type and amount of crime. I think you will notice the violent crime and home break-ins and car thefts being committed by the race in question. It is just facts of Antioch and needs to stop.

Nick C May 21, 2013 - 1:16 pm

You got the race from a car theft how? You saw the car being stolen by a black man? You saw these violent crimes? What exactly is your point? If you have one at all.

Hil May 21, 2013 - 1:04 pm

It’s not about race… it’s about ignorance and stupidity. I don’t care what you look like… if you’re a criminal, then you’re a criminal and you should be punished. Our world would be way better off without stupid ignorant criminals like this punkass. Yeah, he’s black, so what…. what if he was white, asian, mexican? It doesn’t matter, you caused a crime you should be punished.

I’m white and I have nothing against anyone of a certain race. I live in Pittsburg and I feel that there are tons more black people than white people but I don’t give a crap. If you’re cool, you’re cool. Why do people have to hate on race, it’s the crimes and the people that cause them that we should hate.

This poor man was hurt by a CRIMINAL! Take him down.

Again, race doesn’t matter… the kidnapping of the girl in Antioch by the Garido man – he was white. The kidnapping of the 3 girls in Ohio by that creepy guy – he was mexican. The killing in the Colorado movie theater and the killing in Connecticut – they were white. So please tell us, what does this man being black have to do with anything.

If you’re being racist, you’re just as bad of a criminal. Ignorance.

PG May 21, 2013 - 5:48 pm

Correction!! The kidnapping of the 3 girls in Ohio was by a Puerto Rican man not Mexican.

Deltakid May 21, 2013 - 1:07 pm

I am a 30 year African American Citizen of Antioch. I have been here when most of all crime was Meth related white crime then it became this Killing and Robbing by mostly Black and Hispanic gang members. If you want someone to blame for the latest influx of criminals try the developers that are redoing Hunters Point, Oakland and the Water Port Cities of Richmond and Vallejo. They will keep an area poor and blighted to keep the price down then move the people out to set up upscale urban living. It goes on all over the country. If you want to fight back limit the amount of section 8 in the cities do you think Alamo, Diablo and Other cities have this problem? Why should a criminal live in an upscale house in Antioch to rob and kill void the section 8 if they are caught doing anything illegal. I can promises you these crimes are not coming from people who came from Oakland who brought a house to raise there family’s in peace they have the same dreams as everyone. I learned in six sigma the 80/20 rule 80% of your problems are coming from 20% of your population/supply. If Antioch can address the 20% of serious criminals out there, Antioch will be like in the late 80s out here, a great place to live.

Pinocchio check May 22, 2013 - 1:31 pm

Well said!

cindy frye May 21, 2013 - 1:09 pm

A criminal is a criminal! White, brown, black skin isn’t the issue! The issue is the criminal and the victim. Justice in this unfathomable crime is the goal! Keep race out of it, instead let’s work together to get this crime solved!

Dale Burrow May 21, 2013 - 1:25 pm

Forget them Oakland and Richmond criminals us Antioch folks should be whooping their asses and kicking them out of our town!!! Or hang the council members who opened up our town to these low lifes……

Sean M May 21, 2013 - 1:46 pm

Nichole.. Calling people monkeys you are definitely a racist!! Not only are you a racist you are a coward. Nick makes valid points and shows his face. People in a community should be solution oriented not name callers that make ignorant comments and remain faceless

Brian Vaile May 21, 2013 - 1:51 pm

Please blow up the photo to see his face! He is around here somewhere and if we can see his face we could find him.

Nick C May 21, 2013 - 2:22 pm

And that means what? You think somebody is scared of you? Please! You mad bro? LOL

albert c May 21, 2013 - 4:19 pm

dude whats your problem? they are asking for a clearer picture so the guy can be id’ed, and your sittin here trolling people and playing the race card throughout the whole thread? seriously whats wrong with you?

Nick C May 21, 2013 - 9:16 pm

#1 it was a direct reply to me. Look at the thread. If it wasn’t directed at me why reply to the person’s comment? Duh! It would’ve been on its own comment and not as a reply. And wtf is a race card? Oh you mean when I’m responding to the racist posts on here? Please, have a seat

Chris G May 22, 2013 - 11:24 am

Nick you’re an idiot. It’s called statistics not racism. You are being racist by protecting the blacks simply because you are one. Plain and simple look at the statistics of African Americans over them world. Main point this kid needs to be caught this isn’t about you and obviously you are starving for attention. Well there you go

Nick C May 22, 2013 - 11:41 am

No, Chris, you’re the idiot. You’re clearly incapable of forming a logical argument without resorting to wack insults. Try again

Chris G May 22, 2013 - 11:44 am

You probably are on section 8 and using our tax money. I clearly am not an idiot because you can’t even defend the statistics point. Have fun fighting something you will never win:)

Nick C May 22, 2013 - 12:21 pm

@ Chris : Actually the stats you throw out are not factual. Your delusion makes sense though. Look how you foolishly ASSumed that I’m on section 8 (as if that actually means anything) let me guess, you think people on section 8 are violent or something? Lol hmm did you know that the majority of section 8 recipients in America are white women and mostly seniors? I guess granny is gangsta huh?

Chris G May 22, 2013 - 2:48 pm

Ha yeah the granny’s that let their thug grand children live with them and their daughters/ granddaughters with tons of kids. Be part of the positi

Chris G May 22, 2013 - 2:58 pm

Positive change and not the negative.

Nick C May 22, 2013 - 3:18 pm

@ Chris : I already am! I’m a productive citizen who is not causing trouble. I also don’t treat my fellow citizens like dirt or make wack assumptions about one group of people as if they are to blame for a select few. Despite what you think, “black thugs” are not the only ones on section 8. Are you willing and wanting to kick out the white section 8 recipients as well?

Pinocchio check May 22, 2013 - 1:38 pm

Yep, when I read it, it sounded like a reference directly to Nick’s pic, it came directly after someone mentioned he shows his face – which shows more nerve than most of us here, including me. I don’t agree with most of his points, but it sure came off as a threat to him, what do you expect him to do? Not defend himself. Don’t twist it into being about the suspect video, he’s clearly defending his own pic.

Nick C May 22, 2013 - 2:10 pm

@Pinocchio : Seemed pretty clear to me too. But folks like to be coy when it’s convenient :-\ the only reason my photo shows is likely because who ever owns this blog uses word press. I’m a registered Word Press user. I’m assuming that’s why. But I don’t troll on forums so I have nothing to hide. Even my Facebook is open. Although we may not agree, it doesn’t mean people can’t discuss something and present a logical argument. Unfortunately, that’s not been the case here.

Julio May 21, 2013 - 1:57 pm

Well, Burke, I was hoping against hope when I came to your little blog it would not become like this. I have been in Antioch over 46 years and plan to continue to live here. We CAN make it better. We just need to work together.

jo May 21, 2013 - 2:07 pm

Everyone is assuming this man is guilty without questioning. I do hope that the person will be caught. In my day, a long, long time ago, my grandfather would take me and my brother to church. We would stop about a block and a half away, and ride the rest of the way with his friend. This was early 60’s and my wise, wonderful grandfather told me we were riding with him because some people did not other people because of the color of their skin. He said every one was a different shade of brown. Just remember this is a person of interest, not already found guilty and sentenced.

romelo ocacio May 21, 2013 - 2:10 pm

I use to go to Antioch when I was young. One of my Parents if not a elder in the family would drop us off to the stamm theatre. I would say late 70’s to early 80’s, I was chased, had a cross bow pulled on me and had numerous altercations with older white men. they called my nigger, monkey, and other racial names. but never once did I have a hateful bone toward any white person. cause even back then I knew that a few bad white people did not make them all racist or evil. and by the way I am a full blooded Puerto Rican.

romelo ocacio May 21, 2013 - 2:14 pm

and here we are debating race, and pointing fingers while a 86 year old man is holding on to his life. smh..

Scott May 21, 2013 - 2:18 pm

I have been in Antioch for 53 years. It is not the same town it was when I was a kid but what town is. As it is today Antioch is a slum, there is white/black/brown trash everywhere you go. For those who must try and place blame on any one race or color you are ignorant. As I see it our entire society, mankind as a whole even, is in a rapid decline and if things continue as they are our very existence as a species is doomed and in the not so far off future. What is the remedy, I have no clue but we must all work together to find it or we are in trouble.

jo May 21, 2013 - 2:20 pm

I thought it looked like a bottle of water.

jay May 21, 2013 - 2:26 pm

Just like the white Antioch native caught breaking into my car or the Hispanic men trying to break into a friends house.

santos May 21, 2013 - 2:33 pm

Regardless of race … their criminals who do not care about the lives of lawful citizens in antioch. Now more than ever we need concealed weapon permits to be able to protect ourselves from these violent criminals. APD is doing what they can but its gotten way out of control for them. Lawful citizens should have a right to carry a concealed handgun to protect oneself from these criminals who as you can see will shoot you just because. APD and contra costa sheriff’s need to change their policies from may issue to shall issue concealed weapon permits.

tim May 21, 2013 - 3:19 pm

Do what Boston did. Shut the whole city down, find the one (s) responsible and serve justice. All people, all races, work together and getem…DFW Boston..

eddie May 21, 2013 - 2:35 pm

Nicole speak your mind I agree, STRONGLY , and nick the reason why people don’t focus on Hispanics or Asians is because its the African americans doing more of the crimes. and it happeneds more on lone tree near deer valley high school, I know cause I used to work at the round table there, and they just love being pissed,( whats so bad in their lifes that they gotta walk with a mean face sagging their pants) that’s why people point and assume ALL black people are the same, is it fcked up YES now whens the last time you’ve heard of northerner or a scrap commiting a crime????????

Nick C May 21, 2013 - 4:11 pm

@Eddie: LMAO When was the last time a Northerner or Scrap committed a crime? You can’t be serious! *friday voice* Bye Felicia

Kim A May 21, 2013 - 2:39 pm

There are a lot of good people in this town too. My car wouldn’t start last week at the post office and I was offered help by people parked on each side of me (one white woman and one kind black man and his wife). It is not a racial issue –its a deplorable attack on the elderly. I pray he will recover from this.

Bluebird May 21, 2013 - 2:46 pm

This is just awful! And the fact that most of the crime being committed in Antioch are black males doesn’t surprise me AT ALL!!!

Locked&Loaded May 21, 2013 - 3:01 pm

Get rid of the god damn Section 8 in the city and everyone will be amazed at the reduction of crime in our city period !

mamalenasdailysmackdown May 21, 2013 - 3:05 pm

Wow! It seems we have forgotten all about this gentleman who was seriously hurt. Sad to see that racism still runs rampant in the East County. I moved to Pittsburg in ’79…I loved the slow pace of things…so different from my life in East Oakland. Attending Skyline High I had learned diversity when it was in its infancy. That’s probably why I was able to run several businesses both in Pittsburg and Antioch as well as West Pittsburg(Baypoint). While those of us in Pittsburg didn’t have to deal with too much racism…Antioch and Brentwood was a different thing. Not only were we cautious of the people who lived there…but we also were cautious of the police who were suppose to protect us. It seems that the ‘good ole boy’ mentality is still alive and strong. Smh. Instead of pointing fingers at which race brings more crime…maybe we should be looking at the fingers pointing back at ourselves. With the influx of sooooooo many people into a space that was not designed to support the weight, maybe the problem is overwhelmed city and county workers who don’t have the resources to keep criminals off the streets…..maybe race has nothing to do with crime….maybe its the developers greed…..while racism will always be the social bandaid for those that to inept to make a change or inspire change, Remember folks criminals target VICTIMS…not race. P.S….I moved to Manteca 13 years ago. There was 995 African-Americans in the city. It was said that those of us who migrated here brought crime also.(sometimes they accused our lighter-shade of brown brothers from Stockton). Had my home built from the ground up, but some to this day still say Im on Section 8…..(wish I could). I say this to say…before you make a rant….get your facts straight…before you make a broad statement…do your homework. Especially if you are gonna post on a Public network. L. Dabney

Eursula May 21, 2013 - 3:32 pm

Wow are you people serious African American people doing all the crime well take a look at the most wanted web, and all the other criminal websites and tell me what you see I’m an African American woman my house broke into by whites, my car stolen twice by white men and I was also abducted by a white man and raped do you think I hold all white people accounteable for that no some of my best friends are white. Yes and a lot of crime that has happened in the last couple of months have mostly been white. So quit playing the race game you assholes. Nick Thanks.

cindy frye May 23, 2013 - 6:27 pm

Love to you and sorry to hear what you went through. I agree, let’s just call them criminals. It doesn’t matter what color you or I are. My compassion for you is overwhelming!

Lady E May 21, 2013 - 3:37 pm

People, remember, we are discussing what is going on in Antioch right now. It has nothing to do with what happened in years past or in other towns or states. It is what we all know what is happening to make our city unsafe. Listen to a scanner, it will open your eyes to the truth.

gen. May 21, 2013 - 4:01 pm

It doesn’t matter if this person is black, white, hispanic, asian, or indian. The fact is that an 83 yesr old man was brutaly beat for his own belongings. How dare anyone commit such crime. It goes to show that our society has no soul no remorse no respect. Incredible that there was no one around to stop it!? No one to help the poor old man fight off this thug!? We are pointing fingers at the racial aspect but what about other civilians around why didnt they bother to help?! Sad sad story.

FedUp May 21, 2013 - 4:12 pm

This is for Connie. I’m not sure where you live in Antioch but the so called “bashing” you refer to is reality for most of us. I live here, grew up here and my mother grew up here and graduated from Antioch high school. I am 60 so I’ve been in this town for many years. During the past 10 years Antioch has become a ghetto that encompasses all colors, white, black,Hispanic, Asian and the list goes on. Yes most are African American males and yes this all started with families migrating out here from the East Bay. I watched it happen. I know the demographics of this community since 1960. I am not a racist but a realist. In my neighborhood which is nice and quiet we have three trouble makers. One is Hispanic, the next is white and the last is African American who, unlike the other two, does not own there home and is section 8. I watch all three’s customers come in and out of the neighborhood all day and night. BUT the drive by shootings did not start until the section 8 family moved in. And we have successfully had them removed. Get your head put of the sand, Antioch is ghetto and until we get businesses and people in this town who work and pay Taxes instead of drawing welfare and sitting home all day getting high and selling drugs we will never change this city. Frankly I am tired of hearing the blacks whine about racism when they are as big a racist as anyone. Not all blacks but a vast majority of the ghetto blacks that have migrated to Antioch again during the past 10 years. I don’t care what color you are, if you love this town then get off your butt and be part of the solution and not part of the problem. Come to coffee with the cops, come to community meetings, attend. City council meeting get involved and help us make this a great place to live. Help us chase the riff raff, white, black, brown, purple or pink out of our community.

Nick C May 21, 2013 - 4:29 pm

Yeah and we’re tired of Whites stereotyping and hiding their racism using unproven data and falsehoods. If you think Antioch is ghetto that’s your business. But the city as a whole is different than the ONE family YOU dealt with. Where I live, across the street is a section 8 family that constantly has riff raff traffic in and out. Disturbances, people hanging out, pitbulls gone amuck you name it. Guess what? They’re WHITE!!! It is NOT a black thing. Talk about getting your head out of the sand….

Rrgirard May 21, 2013 - 8:09 pm

These are some of the most ignorant comments I’ve ever seen. I lived in Antioch from 1967 until Dec. 2012. Growing up in Antioch when it still had a strong industrial base. That base disappeared in the late 70’s and early 80’s. The lose of that industrial base was the downfall of our beloved town just like the industrial collapse of most of our industries, lead to the demise of many cities econmic welfate. The rise of the service based economy left towns like Antioch in the toilet. Of course this is the simplified version but that’s it in a nutshell. Quit being idiots and blaming other groups of people for problems they themselves are the victims of.

I am an African American Male, I am 30 years old and I am from Richmond. I never been in Jail i don’t do drugs, or have continuous unprotected sex with numerous women and have babies from different women. I never stole anything in my life, so it is very frustrating to see people of my same color doing things that they should already know better. But when African American man like myself make a choice to do something with our lives we get ridiculed by our own community being called sellout and white washed. The truth is until the african american community stop being hypocrites and recognize we are races just as much as any body else and stop looking for handouts and do something with there lives. I’m sorry we live in America there is absolutely no excuse period regardless what others do why African American males continue to commit unnecessary crimes. I’m saying this because they make hard for me to be taken seriously when all i hear coming out of their mouths N word this B word that and smoking drinking glorifying a life that is not worth living. AFRICAN AMERICAN MALES IF YOU WANT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY SINCE YOU DON’T WANT TO HEAR IT FROM OTHER RACES MAYBE YOU WILL HEAR IT FROM YOUR OWN. STOP BLAMING EVERYBODY IN WHY YOU ARE WHERE YOU AT. IF YOU HAVE NO INTENTIONS TO BE A FATHER STOP HAVING SEX WITH MULTIPLE WOMEN. BELIEVE IN GOD, FIND A WIFE AND BE A FATHER TO YOUR KIDS. IF YOU CAN’T DO THAT THEN MIND YOUR BUSINESS STAY AT HOME DON’T COME OUTSIDE UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO CONTRIBUTE TO SOCIETY. IM TIRED AS WELL AS ANYBODY, ANYBODY THAT REPRESENTS THAT THUG LIFE CRAP IS A COWARD AND YEP I SAID IT. MARTIN LUTHER KING IS ROLLING IN HIS GRAVE BECAUSE WE SLAP EACH AND EVERYONE OF ARE ANCESTORS THAT FOUGHT FOR EQUALITY AND WHAT DO WE DO WE ACT AS IF WE HAVE NO DAMN SENSE. BLACK PEOPLE STOP GETTING MAD WHEN WE ARE STEREOTYPED WHEN YOU GO TO COMEDY SHOWS AND LAUGH YOUR BUTT OFF AT STEREO TYPICAL THINGS. IF YOU ARE NOT RAISING YOUR KIDS RIGHT WHAT DO YOU THING IS GOING TO HAPPEN. I THINK IF TEENAGERS COMMIT CRIMES THAN THE PARENTS SHOULD GO TO JAIL. I GUARANTEE IF THAT WAS MADE LAW THAN AFRICAN AMERICAN MALES WILL TAKE FAMILY LIFE WAY MORE SERIOUSLY. PUNISH THE PARENTS SINCE THEY CONTINUE TO LET THEIR CHILDREN RUN A MUCK.

China and Europe, and the crime rate is not better believe you me, also think, before you speak, because find the reason Why first, instead of pointing fingers. Do you really believe ***THUGS*** came into this world as babies? WHY are they ****THUGS***? This is maybe to much thinking for you Tiffany

Abbey May 22, 2013 - 10:42 am

Justin,
I agree with you so much. Many people want to blame someone for their lack of doing anything constructive with their lives. I am part Jewish and Irish and I know my ancestors were discriminated against. In New York after the war they would have signs no negros or Irish need to apply. So my family worked in the worst of jobs until they saved enough to start their own business. I am so tired of saying we hate blacks or Mexicans, not true, we dislike the ones that refuse to be a productive citizen. The president is African American…so they can not say they can’t get good jobs? To see a young person of any race hurt a defenseless 83 year old man is terrible. Go to you tube and look up the boys on Sycamore Drive. It is sad! I could not wait to get my work permit so I could get a job. Everyone thinks that they deserve a handout. Well they don’t and it is causing our ecomoney to be the worse it has ever been. Very sad, I won’t even go to the store after the sun goes down, not that it matters. Quit blaming the police, they do the best they can considering how much crime we have and how little police we have to protect us. I wish I knew the answer. I hope our town can turn around and we citizens can take our town back!

todd May 22, 2013 - 6:30 pm

I grew up in Antioch and what a change over the last 5 years. It isnt about race,it is about all these section 8’s flooding the Antioch market. They bring all their relatives from Oakland, san pablo, richmond, etc.Poof the crime goes up,what a shock.Antioch really dropped the ball on this one.Hopefully one day it will get better, only time will town.

Nick C May 22, 2013 - 9:03 pm

Interesting how everyone seems to have magical powers to know this suspects housing status but yet can’t identify him. What happens if they find him and he’s not even from Antioch and is not on Sec.8? What happens to your boogeyman at that point? Who will you then shift the blame too then? THAT’S how I know it has everything to do with your own stereotypes and zero to do with facts. Because no one here has facts, just wack racially tinged accusations and stereotypes. If you fake sleuths know so much, how is that none of you have identified or caught this guy? GTFOH with all that BS sec 8 hype. Find a new Boogeyman!

Nick C May 22, 2013 - 9:07 pm

@ Todd: You say it’s not about race? Ok, so who is “THEY” then? Who is the “they” you are you talking about? Don’t worry I’ll wait

BizOwner55 May 22, 2013 - 10:33 pm

A month ago two nice African American boys came in my business and stole my phone and tried to steal what they thought was an iPad (my Kindle). There are three African American ppl who harass folks for money in the shopping center where I work (Raley’s) almost daily. The alleged perp in the photo who assaulted the 83 yr old man is African American. I don’t think we are being racist. It’s just the facts. There are good upstanding black folks in Antioch. But it seems most of the crimes I am seeing are committed by African Americans. Just my $.02.

Nick C May 23, 2013 - 9:50 am

@BizOwner55: So you’re saying that based off the few crimes you saw, those few makes the whole black population criminals? All of us? You can’t be that obtuse. Because every time I read about a school shooting the killers are white. So I guess according to your logic every white person is a mass murderer. Oh but you’re not racist….. Either way your logic is questionable to be nice about it.

Carrie May 23, 2013 - 12:14 am

In the past ten years Antoch has certainly changed, and I personally can not wait to move. This poor gentleman was shot and I commend the person who posted this so we can start to make those who commit crimes responsible for their actions.

Nick C May 23, 2013 - 9:57 am

@ Carrie : these people on this post have no interest in helping to find the suspect in this crime. They’re only interested in who to blame. This blog and others like it simply allows them to come out and vent their racist rants that they can never say to their neighbors face. Or their co workers, or the guy behind the counter etc. On here they can do it thanks to the anonymity of the Internet.

Bee May 23, 2013 - 3:53 pm

While we sit around and call each other names, racism is alive and well. WE ALL see color… think, how do you describe yourself? I was raised in Africa and am proudly African, would never want to be anything else (not that anything else is less). I am well educated and speak well over 5 languages, including French and Spanish. I make an effort to even understand other languages… Portuguese, Tagalog and any other I can. Does that mean I do not see race? No!! Like any other American, I will identify people by their race first. It doesn’t mean its a negative thing, but we all do it.
Look into research and if we want to speak of statistics – minority children get “pushed out” of school more than they “drop out”, they do not get the same opportunities non-minorities do. Minorities get under-tested and under-treated in health systems. Minorities have worse health outcomes than their white counterparts. Minorities get arrested more than their white counterparts. All this happens yet instead of uniting and bettering our future, we choose to call each other names and judge people by their race.
NONE of us choose our race and should NOT be punished for it! I have lived in El Cerrito, Oakland and Oakley now – I have a great job, I am a master’s student at a well known school. I am not better than anyone else! We ALL can’t be highways, someone has to be a road or a street somewhere. Love each other… after all, at the end of it, we ALL die.

EVERYTHING in life is an option except your race and the fact that one day, we will ALL die!!

“Violence is the voice of the unheard”… MLK

Praying for the gentleman who hangs onto his life. Send love his way, hatred does not heal anyone.

cindy frye May 23, 2013 - 7:04 pm

JohnM May 23, 2013 - 1:45 pm

Why are you so defensive. Oh yeah because your black. no racism in that is there? Come on man do you watch the fng news at night.
Well apparently they caught this guy. Everybody else ois wrong and your right you have it all figured out??? Where is the accountability in the Black Community? There is an issue with respect and crime within the Black community. Weather it be from socio-economics or just an inherent belief that they are entitled to things. this happens in all races but is prevelant in the Black Community. Call me a racist if you want idiot but the Black Community although I believe most are good people has some serious issues. Until we all acknowlege it, it will only get worse. “Find it hard to shed a tear you brought it on yourself my dear” You want to find the racist look in the mirror. IDIOT!!!

Nick C May 24, 2013 - 8:37 am

@John M: Yeah I watch the news at night. What’s your point? I see criminals of all races. Maybe you see only the blacks and ignore the rest of them. Am I being defensive? You’re the one resulting to petty insults. You mad bro? LOL. I’m “defending” my people from the bs accusations of here. If I was Asian and people were on here going on and on about Chinks and go back to Chinatown I’d do the same. Racism is wrong in any form. Not just when it’s leveled towards black people. Sounds to me like you could use a look in the mirror.

MrsBelvedere May 23, 2013 - 3:08 pm

This is so sad, this is the main reason why i feel so uncomfortable in Antioch… White people look at me & my Fiancee like we’re criminals… he has a BA and I’m a phlebotomist technician!!! and we’re both in our Mid 20s, probably more educated than the ass holes making these stupid assumptions!!! and theres tons of crime in antioch that happens from other races trust me i know… it just doesnt get published. & you cant even be on section 8 with a criminal record, no one in your household can have a criminal record!! you guys are sadly misinformed

So one thing not mentioned here! Kids need to be reached at an early age no matter the color of their skin! Churches in the community have children and youth programs but “the workers are few.” I was a troubled youth and believe if just one person would have invested their time and showed me a way out, I would have benefited from it. Fortunately, due to sports I was able to see how other families lived more stable lives which led me to want to be a better person and citizen. Ulitmately, however, it was our Lord, Jesus who saved me from my distructive self. I have given back to him by serving in chidren’s ministries. I don’t live in CCC any longer but I am aware that Golden Hills has wonderful ministries for children. There are many different people attending with a variety of skin-colors praising and learning from our one, true God! If we put this in the context of how God would view these posts toward one another, I’m hoping we could see the hurtful way we treat others.

If everyone just respected the ten commandments and instilled them in their children’s heads we would be a much better society. Take the religion out of the ten commandments and respect them for just the words that they are. You don’t even have to be religious to respect those ten things. I’m also so sick of everyone who flips the race card crap. That’s right its crap and the people who use it for an excuse are crap too. We are all responsible for our own actions. Trying to blame it on society, income, race, etc. is a cop out. Parents who allow their kids freedom to roam anywhere and everywhere late at night or in the middle of a weekday are just plain dumb parents and have no right to have children. Children and their parents is where all this antisocial behavior stems from. Just respecting the ten commandments would eliminate 90% of all crime. Parents need to set good examples as the product of themselves is their children.

Crime statistics show where the problem is. The solution is education. School is free to all.
Take advantage of it or parish with the rest of the dropouts.

I would like to hear the wisdom of Nic C. On how to improve the conditions of the communities that we live in. All that I have heard is fluff, minus any empathy for the victim of this crime. Light a candle instead of cursing the darkness.

@ related: My idea to improve the conditions in the communities we live in? First, I’d improve funding for the public after school programs so the youth (ALL RACES, not just blacks as people in this thread has suggested) will have positive activities to engage in instead of crime. When I was in High school we had summer job programs. It kept us off the streets and out of trouble. Second, have the police step up patrols in shopping areas. Especially ones who have a history of crimes happening (like this one) and make the police accountable for being efficient with their staffing levels. Many employers are making due with less so instead of blaming the budget and making excuses, the APD can get more effective. 3rd, city leaders should be engaging their constituents regularly. If there are trouble spots and problems they should be dealing with it. That’s what they are paid to do.

As for empathy, I lost all interest in this case after reading all the BS stereotypes and racist rants on this blog. If whoever created this page were somehow looking to help catch a suspect in this crime, it was an epic fail. Because all it did was provide a forum for a lot of bigotry. Not one person focused on the case or trying to identify a suspect. What they did do was look for scapegoats and someone or a some group to blame.

The public was very instrumental in identifying and catching the perp. Thank you to all who informed the authorities to help the investigation. It still does not help the man laying on a hospital bed clinging for his life. I am very close to this case and wish that 15yo got the parenting he needed to make better decisions.

You are right Nick, racism is apparently alive and well and goes by the name of “Nick C”.

Grow up and acknowledge reality. It is the first step in a long journey. If you can’t do that, at the very least stop looking for something you won’t find on a blog.

Its very clear that you are the only one here needing to find your own personal boogeymen.

People here lost all empathy for you the moment you played the race card.

@ECW : Right….. So I’m playing the so called “race card” for responding to people saying “you monkeys need to go back to Oakland” or dumb assertions like “it’s the blacks and Hispanics committing all the crime in the city” or “I’m not racist, but blacks are criminals etc” please… Go back and read the comments. Unless you’re one of them. People who use the term Race card= a racist person who denies racism exists.

Nic, thank you for your input. It was more than what I expected.

Someone has to decide to stop arguing this over and over! Will it be you?
