At 2:42 pm Monday, a male sitting on the side of the overpass along Highway 4 at Somersville in Antioch is threatening to jump.
The incident has shut down traffic in the eastbound direction on Highway 4 and along Somersville below.

Residual Delays on Eastbound CA-4 at Somersville Rd in Antioch. All Lanes Open. Antioch police confirmed via social media that Officer Leon Mendes, a trained hostage and crisis negotiator, responded and after several minutes of interacting with the man, was able to talk the subject out of jumping.

Can we please stop making everyones lives miserable for the few stupid idiots! Make em sign a release if liability form and let the jump! Criminals that cause traffic to be stopped in order to deal with them… Shoot them dead and get the freeways moving! Idiots that stop there car on the freeway in order to watch a solar eclipse… impound there cars and start paying the cops retirement funds! Cause we all know they aren’t earning it any more!

For all of you being so rude.. maybe you have never been there. When you are suicidal you become out of your mind. I’ve seen it and I understand. I hope none of you have to experience this ever, within youself or someone you love. I would have given anything for someone to be able to help my husband the way the police did this man. Sorry for the delay.
These comments are whats wrong with society nowadays. You care more about traffic and having a hassle than you do about a persons life. Who knows what this man was going through and hopefully he gets the help he needs. Pray that other people show compassion if it was one of your family members going through this. Makes me sick what little disregard for human life there is. It doesn’t matter that this person was from Antioch, all that matters is that he is a person. Someone’s son, brother, or father.
We need new negotiation tactics for these attention seekers! I deal with depression myself and can tell you that anyone who doesn’t kill themselves in their house or in private is simply seeking attention.
Personally I think you tell the guy he has 5 minutes to jump or get down or you will push him off after the 5 minutes are up. After 5 minutes you walk over and push his ass off if he isn’t down. Quick and effective.
Why should the rest of us suffer while traffic backs up because these “depressed” people want sympathy. You need someone to push these people off, let me know…..

Mental health is a horrible illness and this man is not a loser, not weak not a coward he sees this as only option obviously. I wish someone had saved my husband from doing this! Don’t judge until you have been directly affected by a suicide. Shame on those you did.
