Updated: HBCU Recruitment Fair Nets $3.2 Million in Scholarships

On Sept. 13, U-Can held it’s 17th Annual Historical Black College and Universities (HBCU) recruitment fair at Deer Valley High School in Antioch.

Multiple school districts participated in the event where students provided transcripts, test scores and visited school representatives. Last year, the event netted more than $700k in scholarships. This year, more than $3.2 million in scholarships (not including the full rides) were awarded to students while 12 Students received full rides.

  • Liberty High School
  • Pittsburg High School
  • Prospects High School

Antioch Unified School District Superintendent Stephanie Anello called the college recruitment fair a great success and was proud that an Antioch school hosted the event.

“It was such a great event and AUSD was excited to host it  –not only for our students but for students in surrounding communities. We know we have amazing students in the Antioch Unified School District, and it is great to see that colleges and universities from across the country also recognize their talents,” said Anello.

Originally, when this story was first reported the day after the event, the total number of scholarships was $1.1 million. On Sept. 22, 2016, the AUSD reported the following:

We just received the updated number of scholarships AUSD students earned at the HBCU College Fair held at Deer Valley High Antioch Unified School District. In total, students were awarded $3,248,320 dollars in scholarships! Additionally, 12 students were awarded full-ride scholarship!

Antioch High School: $471,000 in scholarships, 4 students awarded full ride scholarships.

Dozier Libbey High School: $111,500 in scholarships.

Deer Valley High School: $2,597,820 in scholarships, 8 students received full-ride scholarships.

The United College Action Network (U-CAN), of Sacramento, California, Nehemiah Corporation of America and New Faze Development in partnership with Elk Grove Unified School District, Sacramento City Unified School District, Twin Rivers Unified District, Oakland Unified School District, Vallejo Unified School District, Clark County School District, Nevada, Las Vegas NAACP, a consortium of education partners in, Northern California and Las Vegas Nevada and local community organizations wishes to announce the upcoming Thirteenth Annual Black College Recruitment Fair.

U-CAN President Alan H. Rowe states, “Last years regional event drew more than 15,000 students and parents from Sacramento, surrounding counties and expanded to Las Vegas, Nevada. The College Fair was an overwhelming success with many students receiving on the spot admissions and scholarship offers.” Event coordinators anticipate this year’s attendance draw over 20,000 as the college fair expands its outreach in Las Vegas, Nevada. Representatives from more than forty of the countries leading Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Official representatives for the colleges and universities will be recruiting college bound students on-site during the weeklong event. Interested high school and college students will have the opportunity to receive preliminary “on-the-spot” admissions, scholarships, financial aid information and face-to-face exposure with many of the most respected historically black institutions of higher learning within the United States.

A partial list of participating colleges includes: Alabama A&M University, Alabama State University, Benedict College, Clark Atlanta University, Dillard University, Grambling State University, Hampton University, Howard University, Johnson C. Smith University, Morehouse College, Morgan State University, North Carolina A & T State University, South Carolina State University, Texas Southern University, Tuskegee University, Virginia State University and Xavier University of Louisiana, among many other colleges and universities.

Each college fair event is free and open to the public and all students.
