Antioch, CA – Today, Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-09) announced he will host an interactive forum to encourage women to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The event will take place Saturday, September 27th from 11 am to 12:30 pm, at Black Diamond Middle School, located at 4730 Sterling Hill Drive in Antioch. Attendees should arrive beginning at 10:30am to register and find seats.

Attendees will be able to learn about the different types of STEM jobs, some of the unique challenges and opportunities for women – and resources for pursuing a career in STEM-related fields.

“Many jobs of the future are in STEM fields, and we need to make sure women are well- represented in those industries,” said Rep. McNerney. “This event is meant to encourage women of all ages to get excited about STEM education, and to empower them with the tools they need to embark on a successful, rewarding career.”

The Congressman will be joined by prominent women from the area and around the country who pursued their passion and now work in STEM fields. Panelists include Jennifer Fraser, Senior Manager of Data Center Engineering at Twitter; Sandy Jones, an instructor at Los Mendanos College; Molly Thompson, a chemical engineer with Dow; and Dr. Windy McNerney, Neuroscientist at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory.

The event will also feature informational tables where attendees can find out more about pursuing STEM education and STEM-related careers. Representatives will include: Contra Costa STEM Workforce Initiative; Expanding Your Horizons; Antioch Unified School District; Dow Chemical; and Los Mendanos College.

As a teacher I am very excited about this event. I am always encouraging my young ladies to look forward to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) type jobs. So many more influential jobs are being held by women these days. It is nice to see a STEM forum come to East County.
