Antioch City Park Construction Begins

by ECT

Nearly a year after being burned down by an arsonist, the work to replace the tot lot at City Park has begun as construction crews tore out the old structure and pulled up the ground this week.

The project is set to be completed at some point in late September. If you recall, the park burned down Sept. 17, 2012 while two-teens were arrested in the incident.

One the park burned down, community members and local business worked for months to raise the more than $25,000 which covered the city’s insurance deductible to rebuild the playground (see photos below).

Take Back Antioch raised $8,500 while local business and service groups also donated funds. During the check presentation last December, PG&E was supposed to present a $12,500 check; they increased their donation to a total of $14,500 followed by Assemblyman Jim Frazier donating the final $2,000 to move the project forward.

Dublin-based H&H Construction was awarded the $137,500 contract earlier this year which includes installing a multicolored play structure with specialty features for kids and rubber matting on the ground for safety.

Speaking with the contractor on Tuesday he said the city cannot provide him with the blue prints. Doesn’t know what he is going to do. The city is flying in a consultant from Florida that was there when it was first built hopefully he can enlighten the contractor.

It amazes me that the City of Antioch is always hiring “consultants” to do the work that staff can do, yet the city consistently cries “poor mouth” …. How much is this “consultant” from Florida going to cost ???

Why not just ask some of the many volunteers on the first build? Another way to spend money we don’t have.

Between the $25,000 donations and insurance this isn’t “money we don’t have”.
But the whole build is bad and another contractor contested it. He lost however because of “staff” favoring this guy. This whole deal stinks.

Okay it isn’t “money we don’t have”, but how much of the $25,000 committed to rebuilding the playstructure going towards this “consultant” that the City of Antioch loves to hire, instead of going locally ?????????????????
