Antioch City Council Approves Additional Community Cameras

by ECT

On Tuesday, the Antioch City Council voted to approve a sole source request to purchase community cameras and a license plate reader camera system.

“These cameras are going to help our crime prevention in the Sycamore Corridor,” stated Antioch Police Chief Allan Cantando. “This takes fewer cameras than what we original thought and it costs less than what we anticipated… this is our first phase of the community cameras and we are going to evaluate them after its implementation and then suggest other locations.”

Under the agreement with Odin Systems and Lehr Auto Electric, the city will spend a combined $161,171.02 on equipment to help fight crime. The equipment will also allow the City of Antioch to “Piggyback” the City of Pittsburg’s existing community camera system.  Additionally, there would be an annual maintenance / service fee of 7% of the project cost.

The funds will come from Measure C funding.

Antioch Mayor Wade Harper asked if they could have a discussion on placing cameras along Highway 4. Chief Cantando replied that they have a joint meeting coming up on that topic next week to discuss if the state will help fund the proposal.

Legal noted that tonight’s topic was restricted to the purchase of the two systems on the agenda and Highway 4 camera placement could not be discussed.

“We have been waiting for this and this is a great idea,” said Mayor Wade Harper.

The city plans to expand camera use in the Sycamore Drive Corridor spanning from L Street to Auto Center Drive. Police say that having the additional community cameras in the listed locations would further assist the police department in solving and preventing crime, while also providing a further sense of security and improving the quality of life in this area.

The cameras would help collect data which include: identifying suspect vehicles fleeing the scene of crimes, locate stolen and/or wanted vehicles that enter or exit.

The cameras are being recommended to install at the following Locations:

  • Sycamore Drive & L Street
  • Lemontree Way & L Street
  • Mahogany Way & Auto Center Drive
  • Sycamore Drive & Auto Center Drive

Currently, the City of Antioch has a community camera system in the following locations:

  • Antioch Marina
  • Knoll Park
  • Antioch City Hall,
  • Antioch Community Park
  • Antioch Community Center
  • Antioch Skate Park
  • Prewett water Park

At a future meeting, at the request of Mayor Wade Harper, they will discuss the idea of placing cameras at the on and off ramps of Highway 4.

My mother purchased a condo in that area in 70s my brother a duplex in the 70s. Once a nice area gone to hell with thugs and low life jerks now,. Just SAD.

How will the American militarized theocratic police state be ushered into reality?
By the endless cat-and-mouse game waged between the criminal and the law enforcer. In order to eradicate the growing crime in our region, our politicians will vote for more and more legislation that appears to mirror the omnipresent, omniscient, and omnipotent style of governing so reminiscent of authoritarian dictatorships.
More cameras are good, at the moment, and will do much to snag and punish those guilty of crimes. But as the American crimewave grows stronger, so too will the eye in the sky…
How will America slip into its Orwellian future? By the hands of the chronically criminal-minded forever strengthening the scope of our law enforcers.

(P.s. Not an anti-cop post)

Put Cameras on Delta Fair BLVD between Sommersville and Buchanan Road and watch all the illegal activities pile up! This area is drug selling and using, robbery, theft, car burglary, business burglary, rape, the list goes on and on. Especially next to the Sommersville Car Wash and behind the old CVS. These losers use this area for all their illegal business. NO CAMERAS. NO SECURITY! Just free for them to use and terrorize the businesses and residents

Yes, the Standard Station, right behind it is a drug haven also. I understand they want cameras at Buchanan and Delta Fair. The more we have the better off the city is. Look how much it helped in Pittsburg. Everything moved to Antioch.

That is a good idea, there is so many bad things that go one in this single area!!

Where did Antioch go wrong??????? Jun 16, 2016 - 9:41 pm

I think Ner Ron has the right idea. Today, it is cameras in the troubled areas. Tommorrow cameras will be on every street corner, house and business. I thought our forefathers built this country on the foundation of little government involvement in our lives. Camera pushers be careful for what you wish for. The next camera may be placed on a pole and pointed directly at your house.

Cameras and their costs should not replace feet on the ground. Cameras make sense in their use as a proactive crime prevention tool and not how our mayor, for now, has approved as a reactive tool. I suggest cameras in every entrance and exit into Antioch from another city or township to flag our police to suspects entering in leaving our city.

Just a reminder.
It’s election time . 4 people running for re-election. To little to late.
Antioch the still
Missing cops promised if we approve measure c.
Guess what, measures c was approved 3 years ago, 11 million dollars , plus, in the bank , and still no net gain of officers .
While cameras are a nice tool , but it’s still a tool.
I suggest a shot spotter system is also needed .
The city council needs to put the city manager on notice.
If he can’t deliver within a given time frame, he needs to be replaced (fired) with somebody who can.
