Antioch: Children Left Home Alone, 9-Year-Old Hand Injured in Firework Explosion

by ECT

At 5:38 pm Monday, Antioch Police responded to a report of a child with a hand injury on the 3200 block of Madrone Street.

When police arrived, they located three children under the age of 9 without supervision after a child who was injured from a firework explosion showed up on a neighbors doorstep with a hand injured.

Per radio traffic, the neighbor stated the child’s hand had “blown up” but later stated it was bleeding with a laceration.

Police then went to the home where the incident originally occurred where they believed a third child may still be inside. When police entered the home, it was filled with smoke which triggered a full response from Contra Costa County Fire for a potential residential fire.

Police later located the 4-year-old child on a neighboring street after another neighbor called dispatch stating they had located a child wandering the neighborhood.

CONFIRE arrived on scene and found the home filled with smoke, but there was no indication a fire at occurred.

According to Antioch Police Sgt. Tom Furman, the 9-year-old child was flown to a local hospital in stable condition with an injury to his hand. The children’s ages were 9, 7, and 4.

“Both mom and dad had left to go to work,” said Furman. “It’s unclear who was watching the children while the parents were at work. We are currently investigating and CPS was notified.”

Furman added that it’s premature to determine what charges will be filed but said this will be going to the DA for review.

“This is a good lesson for the general public for them not to leave their children home alone until they are old enough to make good decisions for themselves,” added Furman.

No further information was released.

ECT leading the charge against these parents because last time I checked its not against the law to leave children home alone. Poor decision but is this really news?

Maybe people in the area who dealt with the emergency vehicle traffic would like to know what was going on?

@Ann

Yes, its news. Police, fire, AMR, helicopter responding. I am sure people want to know. I do not see ECT leading any “charge” I see this page informing the community. Do you not watch the news or something Ann because there is far worse being shown on TV.

Ummmmm I’m not a lawyer…. But I think there are child endangerment laws on the books which leaving young children home alone while you are at work wld fall under… Can’t believe someone needs to explain to you…. You are prob one of these type of parents that need to be investigated if you thought this was ok…. Wow

Both parents went to work? I would never leave my 9 year old home with a 7 and 4 year old. I understand a trip to the grocery store? But WORK??????? That is a long chunk of time. Hope people canlearn from this. There has to be more to this. Where did the child get the firework?

Pretty sad situation. I could not image what its like to be these parents trying to make ends meat and get a crazy call like this. Some of the FB comments are flat out ignorant and stupid but the parents should have had a babysitter.

Seems fitting that the parents make a poor choice to leave 3 kids under 9 unattended, that will result in the children then making poor choices. Parents, do your job!

Irresponsible parents, smh. Hopefully, the DA hits the parents hard with charges. And the kid just learned a lesson as to why you never mess around with fireworks.

I mean do you really think parents are dying to go to work and leave kids home alone ?? It’s called making ends meet and at least they both have jobs and provide for their children ! It’s a struggle !!

JIM,
Make ends meat? Hamburger? Pork chops? I guess chicken is meat, too.

I bet the parent, mama child, or what ever the makers of these children were not working. Maybe working on cashing some government check. Low life trash.

Where did Antioch go wrong??????? Feb 24, 2015 - 11:02 pm

@miseryx
I sure hope the hell you are not trying to justify leaving kids under 9 home alone. Its call sew that hole up and don’t reproduce if you don’t or can’t find the means to take proper care of them. Making ends meet is not a kings X to put your kids in harms way. That bad decision caused a bad injury to a child and the rest of us in medical bills and helicopter ride. The only thing these parents are providing is a dangerous environment. What else happens in that household.
