At 4:01 am Thursday, the Antioch Police Department received 9-1-1 calls for reported gunshots in the area of W. 5th Street.  A short time later Dispatch received calls from family members in the 1100 block of W 5th Street advising their 23 year old daughter had been shot.

Officers arrived on scene to find the 23 year old female bleeding from a gunshot wound to the back of her neck. Officers learned that several bullets were fired from outside of the home and that the bullets penetrated the home through the exterior wall.

One of the bullets struck the female victim as she was sleeping in her bed.

The female victim was transported to an area hospital where she was treated for this non-life threatening injury.

This incident is still under investigation. Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to contact the Antioch Police Dept. at (925)778-2441. You may also text a tip to 274637 (CRIMES) using key word ANTIOCH.

Well Mr. Mayor, while you are out having meetings and hosting marches, people are getting shot while they are sleeping. Stop talking and do something or resign from office!!!!!!!!!!!

Kathryn Linscheid Jul 31, 2014 - 3:26 pm

Mr. Mayor will tell you to stop chasing the police scanner. It’s better than last summer.

Nick Jul 31, 2014 - 10:37 pm

What’s a mayor of a city have to do with an incident like this? Was he supposed to be standing guard outside the home?

Reginald Jamal Brown Aug 2, 2014 - 1:58 am

No Nick he wasn’t supposed to be standing gaurd. Wherever did you get that idea?

He’s supposed to do his job as mayor and keep his promise about “Zero Tolerance for Crime” I’ve had this conversation with you already. Why do you keep supporting this incompetent Mayor?

I suggest you research the job description of a mayor to educate yourself.

faithann Aug 1, 2014 - 10:43 pm

really what do you think you could do ?the mayor knows that olny god can change things this is a dark world and there is power in prayer we are nothinhg with out him so the mayor is right on target try trusting jesus and really i pray for you to put your trust in jesus

faithann Aug 1, 2014 - 11:08 pm

I cant believe how worp up your way of thinking is I have lived in this city for 7 years and let me tell you this is the only ive known of who wakes up while your layed out, he wakes up to pray for u and your loved ones . he doesnt do this for your votes he is doing this because he is a servant of the one who gives you n i a chance to repeant and get away from all this madness , so maybe its time we all stop pointing fingers, and as for our mayor resining, GOD WILL CALL THAT SHOT DONT HATE LEARN TO APPRECIATE IM CALLED A SERVANT WHO DOESNT HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS I DONT KNOW YOU BUT JESUS DOES GOD BLESS YOU

Reginald Jamal Brown Aug 2, 2014 - 2:00 am

@faithann

I suggest you learn how to spell and use proper punctuations. You really seem like an idiot, the way you write.

Just a suggestion, if you want to be taken seriously. BTW, there are many people in the world who believe in God and also believe in taking action… just a piece of advice for ya!

Now go bless yourself.

This makes me sick to my stomach. Can people not feel safe sleeping anymore?

The peace march did not work. Now lets move onto more boots on the ground. Praying the woman will be okay. Who shoots of a gun at 4am anyway? Sick people!

Reginald Jamal Brown Jul 31, 2014 - 6:55 am

Crackheads love to do crazy stuff around 4am. That is about noon according to their sacked out minds

Elaine Jul 31, 2014 - 6:52 am

So, that makes 3 shootings last night?

Julio Jul 31, 2014 - 10:10 am

Where the heck were the others?

Reginald Jamal Brown Jul 31, 2014 - 6:57 am

Perhaps this woman forgot to “pray”, as instructed by our great and competent mayor during the peace march.

I’m glad to know that thugs will fear me as I walk down Sycamore “praying” that I don’t get mugged. Our mayor and city council, sure know what they’re doing 🙂

Tami Aug 1, 2014 - 10:14 am

I believe in the power of prayer.
And even more so in the God who answers. And yes, our city is a mess. So, praying and acting to see the change.

Reginald Jamal Brown Aug 2, 2014 - 2:03 am

@Tami

I, like many people, want the mayor to do his job and take action against crime. I, like many people, believe in god, but also believe in keeping promises. This mayor promised to fight crime and flashed his badge and “zero tolerance for crime” motto to get votes. He hasn’t done anything!

Interestingly, I noticed you included the word “action” in your reply. Maybe you do understand.

faithann Aug 1, 2014 - 10:28 pm

there is nothing wrong with our mayor he is a god fearing man it seems your not or you would no about the power of prayer and jesus so chill out gived him a break anmaybe you should pray for proctecion
igornace is sad

Reginald Jamal Brown Aug 2, 2014 - 2:06 am

@faithann

Ignorance is not knowing how to communicate using proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Please go back to elementary school if you want to be taken seriously.

Jonathan Jul 31, 2014 - 9:03 am

Its time to take ACTION! We can not just rely on the mayor, we must also play a part and support police officers on duty. My prayers go out to that 23 year old.

Big B Jul 31, 2014 - 10:53 am

IT IS TIME! Obviously we are all fed up with the Mayor not doing anything to address the issue! HE NEEDS TO GO NOW!!! I heard the shots last night, yet again! How as fed up citizens do we get the ball rolling to take this into our own hands??!! We need a leader!!

suze rico Jul 31, 2014 - 12:36 pm

Yea mayor, put out or GET OUT

Kimberly Dunn Jul 31, 2014 - 1:57 pm

There was something that happened on Sycamore Drive this afternoon, 2 fire trucks, 7 police cars, and a whole lot of people standing around

jillian Jul 31, 2014 - 2:08 pm

Wow, not even safe inside your own home, in your own bed sleeping!! I know I should be surprised, it’s sad that I’m not. Ridiculous.. it’s out of control. Hope this young woman is ok.

I'mjussayn Jul 31, 2014 - 4:16 pm

Its good to know people still care out there. Especially about the downtown citizens. I don’t care where u live or how much $ u make this town needs everyone to care about each other, it is the mayor and the police that wants to divide us people. We live here. Where does the mayor live or any of the officers that work in this city. We live in antioch, so let’s clean up this place and pull together as neighbors n stop relying on people who don’t n want to divide us please.

Where did Antioch go wrong??????? Aug 1, 2014 - 5:08 pm

I’mjussayn. Why would you think the cops are trying to divide you. You think they like dealing with the crap day in and day out to have people like you throw out dumb statements. You need to learn where to point the finger because it should not be at one of the hardest working class in Antioch. And yes you are right, many of the cops decided to move their families out of the war zone.

BIG B Jul 31, 2014 - 4:31 pm

Mayor Harper read this!! You can’t B.S. the people any longer!

About Antioch crime rates

With a crime rate of 55 per one thousand residents, Antioch has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes – from the smallest towns to the very largest cities. One’s chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 18. Within California, more than 96% of the communities have a lower crime rate than Antioch. In fact, after researching dangerous places to live, NeighborhoodScout found Antioch to be one of the top 100 most dangerous cities in the U.S.A.

Importantly, when you compare Antioch to other communities of similar population, then Antioch crime rate (violent and property crimes combined) is quite a bit higher than average. Regardless of how Antioch does relative to all communities in America of all sizes, when NeighborhoodScout compared it to communities of similar population size, its crime rate per thousand residents stands out as higher than most.

The crime data that NeighborhoodScout used for this analysis are the seven offenses from the uniform crime reports, collected by the FBI from 17,000 local law enforcement agencies, and include both violent and property crimes, combined.

Now let us turn to take a look at how Antioch does for violent crimes specifically, and then how it does for property crimes. This is important because the overall crime rate can be further illuminated by understanding if violent crime or property crimes (or both) are the major contributors to the general rate of crime in Antioch.

For Antioch, we found that the violent crime rate is one of the highest in the nation, across communities of all sizes (both large and small). Violent offenses tracked included forcible rape, murder and non-negligent manslaughter, armed robbery, and aggravated assault, including assault with a deadly weapon. According to NeighborhoodScout’s analysis of FBI reported crime data, your chance of becoming a victim of one of these crimes in Antioch is one in 98.

Significantly, based on the number of murders reported by the FBI and the number of residents living in the city, NeighborhoodScout’s analysis shows that Antioch experiences one of the higher murder rates in the nation when compared with cities and towns for all sizes of population, from the largest to the smallest.

In addition, NeighborhoodScout found that a lot of the crime that takes place in Antioch is property crime. Property crimes that are tracked for this analysis are burglary, larceny over fifty dollars, motor vehicle theft, and arson. In Antioch, your chance of becoming a victim of a property crime is one in 22, which is a rate of 45 per one thousand population.

Importantly, we found that Antioch has one of the highest rates of motor vehicle theft in the nation according to our analysis of FBI crime data. This is compared to communities of all sizes, from the smallest to the largest. In fact, your chance of getting your car stolen if you live in Antioch is one in 96.

Reginald Jamal Brown Aug 2, 2014 - 2:09 am

Great points. Antioch is definitely a ghetto death trap. What has the mayor and city council done? Nothing. They talk a bunch of crap about fighting crime to get your votes and once in office, they don’t do anything.

Phoe Jul 31, 2014 - 6:14 pm

Glad I moved from Antioch several years ago. My place got shot at too, 3 bullets hit my place & my daughter was sleeping on the couch in living room, one of bullets hit the porch railing, so scary when you have kids. Praying for Antioch!

Chuck Jul 31, 2014 - 7:07 pm

Reg,

I think someone needs to meet with THUG LIFE and ask him to use smaller caliber bullets that can’t penetrate walls. Maybe the Mayor will pass a new law restricting THUGS from using higher powered guns. That should do it.

Really THUGS, you need to stop hurting innocent people. I too hope she gets well soon.
This is ridiculous.

Chris Jul 31, 2014 - 9:48 pm

Leave the mayor alone, he’s not batman!!

Reginald Jamal Brown Aug 2, 2014 - 2:10 am

@Chris,

You’re right he’s not batman. However, he is the mayor and his job is to reduce crime.

4 shootings in one week. Not enough people care. The people that turn the other cheek out way the people that want change. We have to many people coming from to many different places that don’t want to adapt to the American way. They don’t want rules and regulations because we have millions of people who fly under the radar. These people get victimized everyday, but they aren’t going go to the police. Our country has changed and Antioch is just one city we are seeing the fall out of the non united front. Most Californians don’t even support unions any longer. It’s a tragedy and I’m glad I was around to see how the USA was prior to the break down in our society. People use to come here to want be Americans, most come now to take what they want. The people that care and stand up are a dying breed. The new culture doesn’t have the back bone. That’s why so many people are depandent on our system. Tough love sucks, but it’s the truth. I wish everyday there was something we could to change these people here. We go out and help where we can, but people don’t want to help themselves anymore. People complain about jobs. That’s BS. It’s the jobs that are available they don’t want. I pay 25 an hour for a house cleaners and they only last 3 months because they get lazy. Why because of welfare. These people know how to work the system. We have a culture of people that thinks the government owes them and a cultural of non citizens that drain our system and never give back. These type are ruining our country. They have zero responsibility, other than to themselves.

Domestic workers are some of the most overworked and underpaid, employees. They may not last because they are not been treated with dignity and compassion. My family has been blessed to employ home helpers that have stayed with us for many years, I think Pope Francis put it best, “theirs is a precious service.”
