A firefighter sustained minor injuries after falling from a second story roof onto a balcony

During the incident, a firefighter was injured after falling through the roof onto a balcony below. He sustained minor injuries per CONFIRE.

According to Robert Marshall, Contra Costa County fire spokesperson, the fire damaged two units at a total of $125,000 while they saved an estimated $1.1 million for the rest of the building. A single firefighter was injured after the fall through the roof, however, he is expected to make a full recovery. The entire building was red-tagged with 15-people displaced.

Marshall credited a couple of factors that were in their favor which limited damage such as fire units already “moved up” from central county as three engines were committed to a major injury crash on Highway 4 and hour earlier, Station 83 crew calling for a second-alarm quickly from the station along the construction of the building.

“We got a lot of resources their quickly. First-in captain used a heavy hose-line first instead of the smaller line we typically use,” said Marshall. “The way the building was constructed, they have a passive fire prevention (wall) which helped keep it in check and within the originating fire location which helped from rapid fire spread.”

Marshall says they still do not know the cause of the fire, but it appears it may be accidental.
