AAA: California Gas Prices On the Rise

by ECT

BAY AREA, Calif. California drivers are paying 3 cents more at the pump this month as gas stations across the U.S. continue to see a late-summer spike in prices.

On Tuesday, Californian motorists paid an average of $2.96 for a gallon of unleaded regular gas. A month ago, California drivers paid $2.93, according to AAA. Across the nation, drivers are paying an average of $2.35 per gallon, which is a 9-cent jump since July.

“California drivers are seeing a late-summer jump in gas prices, which we typically see earlier in summer,” said John Moreno, spokesman for AAA Northern California. “Californians are still paying the highest prices in the nation except for Hawaii, with most stations hovering around $3 a gallon.”

Travel demand is driving the increase in gas prices, and this August will be even busier than normal. West Coast refineries are ramping up production in anticipation of the Aug. 21 eclipse, which will draw more than a million sky-watchers to Oregon, Idaho and Wyoming.

The price of crude oil increased since July but is still under $50 a barrel, Moreno said.

Gas prices were highest in South Lake Tahoe ($3.19) and San Francisco ($3.12), although South Lake Tahoe saw a 6-cent decrease since July.

Gas prices went up 3 cents in Oakland and Vallejo; prices increased 4 cents in San Jose and Sacramento.

Of course gas prices are on the rise. We proved about seven years ago that we’re willing to pay approximately $4.25 a gallon. Gasoline manufacturers were at the peak of profit at that point even though the alleged the increase in price because of the cost of a barrel of oil. We are slowly beginning to migrate our way back up in price even though the price of a barrel of oil has remained relatively the same.
